Investment Over Expectation: Strongman’s Manager Highlights Ghanaian Music Industry’s Financial Constraints

Strongman and Mohammed Muhi-Deen Yakubu

Mohammed Muhi-Deen Yakubu, manager of Ghanaian rapper Strongman, has sparked a thought-provoking conversation on Facebook regarding the Ghanaian music industry’s growth constraints.

He challenged the common narrative that Ghanaian artists are reluctant to promote their brands globally, instead pointing to a lack of investment from Ghana’s wealthy elite.

“Ghanaian rich men are focused on producing alcoholic products, water, building spaces for rent, breakfast products, and politically motivated media platforms,” he noted.

Mohammed Muhi-Deen emphasized that Ghanaian artists face significant financial hurdles:

– Inadequate royalty payments

– Limited streaming revenue

– Absence of investors to finance artistic projects

“Every artist wants to get out there, but…some thumbs up will be welcomed once in a while,” he added, highlighting the need for encouragement and support.

His post sheds light on the industry’s financial struggles and encourages reevaluation of expectations placed on Ghanaian artists.

Key Takeaways:

1. Ghanaian artists face financial constraints due to limited investment.

2. Local wealth is often directed towards non-creative industries.

3. Industry growth requires supportive infrastructure.

Mohammed Muhi-Deen’s insights spark a necessary conversation about the role of investment in Ghana’s music industry.

Ghanaian Billionaire McDan Vows To Invest In Ghana’s Creative Arts Sector

Dr Daniel McKorley
Dr Daniel McKorley

Ghanaian business mogul and Group Chair of the McDan Group, Dr. Daniel McKorley, has vowed to boost his investment in the creative arts sector of Ghana.
Noted for his investments across other sectors of the economy, including aviation, the billionaire has revealed he is willing to invest more in the creative arts sector.

Speaking in an interview with NY DJ on BTM Afrika, the businessman revealed that Ghanaian creatives were super talented and forceful and that they only lacked the financial investment to catapult their careers to the next level.

He referred to dancehall artists Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, saying,

“I can tell you that Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are some of the most talented artists in Africa. None of these Nigerian artists comes close to them, although they are also talented. Their (Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy) music and stage performances are amazing,” he said.

Asked why he would want to invest in the sector, he replied, saying,

“That space brings a lot of money, and I smile where there’s good money, but it’s not my space, so I would want to sit back as the godfather to support (financially, etc.) people to get into that space. You can’t be everywhere. If you’re living in the system, you have to give others a shoulder,” Dr. Daniel McKorley said.

He also called on other businessmen to invest in the creative sector since musicians, among others, were great ambassadors for the country.

“I believe in my heart that they need serious support from businessmen. They are our ambassadors, and I feel we need to invest more in them. I’m not really into that space, but I can see some good young upcoming talents as well.”

In 2022, Dr. Daniel McKorley awarded Ghanaian actor George Quaye a $2 million contract.

Omar B Homage: Revenue from my rendition will go to his family – Kuami Eugene

Kuami Eugene
Kuami Eugene

Ghana’s finest, Kuami Eugene, has paid homage to late Togolese music legend Omar B, known in private life as Ahiangban Omar. Kuami Eugene, in paying homage to the fallen legend, did a rendition of Omar B’s classic hit song, “Awoo Mawugné.”

According to Kuami Eugene, a friend introduced Omar B’s songs to him, due to their creative semblance of ability to write, sing, and produce. Against this backdrop, Kuami Eugene began to enquire about Omar B and realised he died at a point his career was thriving, leaving behind a young family.

Consequently, Kuami Eugene decided to go ahead with a rendition of his “Awoo mawugné” song, which has been on his heart and donate the revenue accrued to Omar B’s family. “After I got the translation of the song from some friends, I realised he had put together some powerful lyrics, so I decided to do a rendition in his honour,” he said. The Rockstar further revealed that, “This is not for profit. It’s purely out of love and respect. I have no intention of exploiting this work. All revenues generated from this upload will go directly to Omar B’s family.”

For this reason, it is Kuami Eugene’s prayer that the song generates a lot of views and money for the family of the late Omar B. Due to his ingenuity coupled with his meteoric rise, Omar B became a role model and an inspiration to Togo’s young talents. While a third album, dubbed ‘Me, Myself and I’, was released in 2019, Omar B died suddenly at the age of 35 on February 20, 2020, following a heart attack.

Philanthropist, Elorm Beenie champions prostate cancer awareness in Hlefi Community

Artiste Manager/Founder of Events 21 and Philanthropist, Elorm Beenie, has launched a prostate cancer awareness campaign.

The initiative is geared towards educating men on the type of cancer that is silently killing elderly men due to lack of knowledge, early diagnosis, and treatment.

He kicked started the campaign with a screening and education exercise in Hlefi in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, to mark his birthday (which fell on March 21).

Speaking on the birthday Charity Project, he said that “the alarming rate of prostate cancer deaths informed his decision to embark on the campaign to prevent men from suffering preventable deaths.”

He said the campaign would be extended nationwide when the resources are mobilized to ensure that a substantial amount of men benefit from it to enrich their knowledge to safeguard themselves.

“Hopefully this won’t be the first of its kind. I intend to get the support so that I can do it in different parts of the region and the country as well”, Elorm Beenie added.

Mr. Beenie revealed that a component of the prostate cancer campaign would be counseling men to develop the habit of speaking up when they experience societal difficulty by breaking from the shackles of the fear of being stereotyped.

This he said is targeted at reducing suicide cases among men in Ghana, through a partnership with professionals and stakeholders.

“Most suicide cases according to the statistics that I have seen, come from men. And all these things stem from so many issues from depression among others. So it is about time men have a renewed mindset, whereby we can engage in conversations on what is worrying them”, he explained further.

The lead of the medical team for the screening exercise, Bridget Letsa, who is a registered nurse said that prostate cancer, which is the abnormal development of cells in the prostate, is the second-leading cancer disease killing men.

She said the high rate of death was due to a lack of awareness, leading men to only access healthcare when the cancer is at an advanced stage and expensive to treat.

“Much attention has not been given to prostate cancer mostly due to several cancers, because when you hear of breast cancer, which is prevalent in men and women, a lot of attention has been given to it. But when it comes to men, prostate cancer is a topic that most often we don’t talk about. But it is good that it is coming up now because it is a silent killer”, she said.

She added that cancer when detected early can be treated with the use of medication, and injections, but late diagnosis would demand surgery due to the advanced stage of the cancer cells.

She said that though patients report late with their conditions, they reject treatments through surgery, which includes removing the testicles, for the fear of losing their sexuality, and opt for medication and injections which cost between about GhC2,500 and GhC12,000 monthly.

She called on men to have themselves screened annually after 40 years, especially those with a family history of prostate cancer, or take advantage of the prostate cancer awareness month of September and get screened.

“I want to tell our men that it is prudent they take care of their health. Men always want to be men, they want to be strong. But then when it comes to certain conditions, being strong is not helpful. Because the earlier you detect it, the better for us. So I want to plead with our men, that when they notice any changes in urination, if they notice any changes in their health, they shouldn’t hesitate to go to the hospital”, she said.

A member of the Hlefi Development Association, Edwin Addae, appreciated the efforts of Mr. Beenie to address the pressing health needs of men, as the focus had been mainly on women.

“This is a novelty, we have never seen this before. We are very grateful to Elorm Beenie. On behalf of the community and all who benefited, we appreciate the initiative”, he said.

He appealed to indigenes of Hlefi living outside the community to contribute their quota towards the development and well-being of their relatives back home.

All beneficiaries who were diagnosed with symptoms of prostate cancer were provided with some medication and advised to seek early treatment. They also received free massage sessions.

The event was partnered by The Urology Yub Ghana, Inspire Rural Development Africa, Twellium Ghana Limited (Verna Mineral Water), Salaria Eyemed, Salaria Transport Services, Deepfresh Seafoods, Estate Kitchen (Ho), Hill View Restaurant (Ho), Events 21, Beenie Words, Selaviv Records, Shugga Creatives, Swiss Angels Foundation, Elike Foundation, Hlefi Development Group, and some individuals who donated to support the cause.
