Veteran Traditional Musician, Israel Maweta, has chided VGMA, Ghana’s prestigious award scheme to give focus to Traditional Music. He previously won “Traditional Song Of The Year” at VGMA 2003 with his viral song “Akume He” (Dagger).
He lamented how Ghanaian Traditional Music and Folklore has dwindled over the years. Though he celebrates new forms of music and how they have been accepted by the music community, he is worried about how Traditional Music has been left to wither away, something that needs to be reversed, he says.
In an interview he granted on Swiss 93.7FM in Ho with MC Flexal, he reiterated the need to pay attention more to the genre so it doesn’t go extinct. Below is a snippet culled from that interview.

n the world of music, recognition is everything. And for Ghanaian rapper Amerado, recognition came in a big way at the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) when he became the first Kumasi rapper to win the Best Rapper award. The award ceremony, held last night in Ghana, is one of the most prestigious events in the country’s music industry.
Amerado, born Derrick Sarfo Kantanka, is a Ghanaian rapper known for his unique style of storytelling and rap delivery. He started his music career in 2015 and has since released several hit songs, including “Yeete Nsem”, which has become a popular series in Ghana. Amerado’s style of rap, which combines witty wordplay with storytelling, has earned him a loyal fanbase in Ghana and beyond.
At the 2023 VGMA, Amerado beat out several well-known rappers, including Teephlow, Medikal, Strongman, and Lyrical Joe, to take home the Best Rapper award. His win was a significant achievement for Kumasi rap and a testament to the talent and hard work of the rapper.
The award was well-deserved, as Amerado has been consistent in his music delivery, with each release showcasing his growth as an artist. His “Yeete Nsem” series, which started as a weekly rap news review on social media, has become a cultural phenomenon in Ghana. The series covers a range of topics, from politics to social issues, and has amassed a large following.
Amerado’s win at the VGMA is not only a personal achievement but also a victory for Kumasi rap. Kumasi, a city located in the Ashanti region of Ghana, has been home to several talented rappers, including Flowking Stone, King Paluta, Strongman and Phrimpong. However, Kumasi rap has often been overshadowed by the dominance of Accra-based artists in the Ghanaian music industry.
With Amerado’s win, Kumasi rap has been given the recognition it deserves, and other Kumasi-based rappers can now aspire to achieve similar success. The win also shows that talent can come from anywhere, and artists should not be limited by their location.

As an independent Ghanaian Afrosoul artiste, Kj. ( Kojo Dwumfour-Poku) takes inspiration from Saint Jhn, 6lack and Asa to form a sound that is uniquely him. He has released countless collaborations with small up and coming artistes as well as his first Ep entitled- “People’s Man” which detailed his journey through love and failed relationships. Using his experiences that were hard earned he’s now preparing to release his second Ep “Havana After Dark( H.A.D)” which presents a melting pot of Ghanaian and Cuban culture, the latter of which he has been steeped in as a medical student studying abroad juggling music , love and depression. One such single off the EP, is that of “Energy”, an intoxicating blend of Afro soul and beats that lead the listener on a journey of justification of infidelity and responsibility to ones partner as it details a previous entrapment in which he tried fruitlessly to overlook his relationship for another woman. His ability as a songwriter comes not only from his recollections of growing up in Accra but also through the musical influence of his Grandmother, a brilliant songwriter in her own right, who introduced him to music at the early age of 5 through the launch of her gospel music album “Bie Kwan” . From that point forward music become a integral part of him that sadly became neglected as he was forced to choose his studies as he pursued a career in medicine which eventually led him to Cuba. It was there that his love for music was reignited as he began to truly understand his calling as a songwriter and learned to balance his studies and his passion. The name Kj. as spelt with the period at the end signifies that this is the truest version of himself with no flair or embellishment period! He expresses himself through music as raw and honestly as he can using it as his own personal form of therapy. His experiences are universal and eventually his songs will be worldwide as he writes about emotions that we’ve all shared and gone through. That’s why he’s KJ. for the soul. Check out “Energy” here.

Eclectic and sharp-mouthed Ghanaian rapper, Strongman has just released a new single titled ‘Dirge’, and it’s already generating buzz in the hip-hop scene.
Produced by renowned beatmaker Tubhani Muzik, ‘Dirge’ is a hard-hitting track that showcases Strongman’s lyrical prowess and the producer’s exceptional production skills.
The song opens with a haunting piano melody that sets the tone for the track’s somber theme. Strongman raps about the fact that he still remains an undisputed name in the rap game. His lyrics are poignant and heartfelt, and they’re delivered with a raw intensity that’s impossible to ignore.
