Blvk H3ro celebrates Rocky Dawuni on Grammy Nomination with “Neva Bow Down” feature

Reggae Artist Blvk H3ro is ecstatic at his first Grammy nomination as he shares that the accolade comes quite unexpectedly.

On Tuesday, the Grammys announced the nominees for the upcoming 65th Grammy awards in February 2023, and Blvk H3ro found his name curiously in the Best Global Music Performance category. The nomination comes for the track “Neva Bow Down” by three-time Grammy-nominated Ghanaian musician Rocky Dawuni which features Blvk H3ro as singer and songwriter.

While speaking to Urban Islandz about his Grammy nomination, a humbled Blvk H3ro says he was over the moon when the news was announced.

“It came as such a surprise! I was honestly lost for words. All you can see is a smile on my face from ear to ear every day now! It’s very satisfying,” he said.

The artist said he couldn’t contain his excitement and revealed that after finding out that the nomination was for real, he hopped around like a child in excitement.

“Honestly, I was in disbelief. I thought it was a mistake or a prank at first, but when I found out it was for real I legit jumped up and down and ran around the house for like 10 mins straight!” he said.

Born Hervin Augustus Bailey Jr, Blvk H3ro has been diligently working as an artist over the past decade, and his unique song and raw talent have not gone unnoticed.

He has been praised by the likes of Prime Minister Andrew Holness for his wholesome music and has collaborated with the legendary Bunny Wailer, UB40, and even newer artists like Equiknoxx and Skillibeng. The artist shared that while he enjoys the moments of triumph, he is ready to get back to work as more is there to be done.

“My team knows me well, so it’s not out of the ordinary that I rarely stop and celebrate these things because I believe there’s always more to do. My passion just won’t allow me to bask in the moment because my mind is already gone to the next task I have to do. So I’d say my work ethic is pretty crazy right now because I get like 3 hours of sleep daily and then it’s right back to work. I make time for self-care of course, but I believe hard work trumps talent any day and I’m living proof of that,” he said.

Blvk H3ro is finally getting one of the best music recognition any artist would welcome, and he shared that he has been putting in the work for fans and music lovers who can catch him on tour right now and look forward to upcoming new music.

“I’m currently on tour in the US since June doing my own headline dates plus opening for the likes of amazing foundation acts like Stephen Marley, Steel Pulse and Alborosie. I have shows booked all the way ’til March 2023 so God is amazing! I’m just staying healthy, keeping in good shape and working on my craft while I continue my musical journey,” the artist said.

Along with Blvk H3ro, the other nominees for the Best Global Music Performance category are “Udhero Na” by Arooj Aftab featuring Anoushka Shankar; “Gimme Love” by Matt B and Eddy Kenzo, “Last Last” by Burna Boy, and “Bayethe” by Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini, and Nomcebo Zikode.

The Best Global Music Performance category is in its second year and is one of two new categories of music introduced by the Grammy’s at the 64th hosting of the event last year. Last year’s nominees for this category included Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Femi Kuti, Wizkid, and Tems, and a few Asian artists, including Chinese-American cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Benin artist Angelique Kidjo, Pakistan’s Arooj Aftab.

ExGlo Foundation Supports Livelihood Projects

A nation who does not invest in their young ones isn’t worth dying for they say; in lieu with this adage, ExGlo Foundation, a non-governmental organization in Ghana has been at the forefront of championing charity initiatives as well as educative and well-meaning programmes to help not only the young ones but people in need and support, across various spheres.
ExGlo Foundation recently undertook 2 initiatives worth highlighting. The first one done in Tamale, capital of the Northern Region of Ghana saw Senior High School Girls undergoing training that will be able to equip them for business start-ups after school.

This year, the foundation selected 2 regions and identified two beneficiaries for its activities. The Northern Region and the Central Region were selected with specific reference to the Tamale Girls Senior High School in the North and the Srafa community in the Central region. The objective of the foundation this year was to engage these beneficiaries in skill development training and also to offer educational assistance to the Srafa D/A Basic school.

The rationale behind the skill development training was based on the needs assessment carried out before the training. We discovered that, with regards to the Tamale Girls, most of the students were more likely to venture into entrepreneurship to make a living for themselves after school. But there are little to no skill acquisition avenues in the school and the few existing ones are expensive and thus unaffordable hence they are not able to pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations when they leave school. This is a major problem in our target regions and most of the students involved in this end up becoming delinquent and living reckless lives. Most of the girls become pregnant after a few months of coming out of school with little or no financial support for themselves and their kids.

For the Srafa Community, they discovered that the women in the community are mostly engaged in farming which serves as their only source of income for themselves and their families. Since farming is a seasonal occupation, these women become financially handicapped when it is not yet the farming season. Most of the women in this community are also housewives who have no particular skill to support their families financially aside farming.

As part of their mission as a Foundation, they decided to equip these girls and women with various skills that can help them attain some level of financial freedom.

Skill Development TrainingaAt Tamale Girls Senior High School:
On the 12th of November, 2022 the ExGlo foundation visited the Tamale Girls Senior High School to train them in liquid soap and bead making. As stated early on, the aim was to equip them with these skills to prevent them from being idle and delinquent after school and also acquire entrepreneurial skills to help them in the future.

Skill Development Training at Srafa Community and Donation Of Essential Items to Srafa D/A Basic School

On the 18th of November, 2022 the ExGlo foundation visited the people of Srafa in the Central region. The visitation was in 2 folds. The first half of the program was to donate some essential items the school needs to facilitate learning and some menstrual hygiene items the female students requested for during the needs assessment conducted. Items donated to the school included marker-boards, sanitary pads, towels, soaps, African print cloths (to cover themselves with it in the washroom when changing), dozens of panties and a cupboard where all these menstrual hygiene items can be kept. ExGlo foundation also repaired the spoilt hand wash basin in the washrooms for them and fixed the marker-boards as well.

The second phase involved the entire community, but mostly the women. The aim was to engage them in making shampoo, liquid soap and pastries, which was very successful. The women were equipped with these skills to help them generate extra income to support themselves and their families.

Rocky Dawuni steps in the Grammys again for Ghana with 3rd Nomination

Rocky Dawuni has just received his 3rd GRAMMY Nomination for “Best Global Music Performance” for his new single ”Neva Bow Down !!” Rocky has the distinction of being the first Ghanaian to have ever been nominated for a GRAMMY award. His previous nominations were for “Best Reggae Album” Branches of the Same Tree, 2016 and “Best Global Music Album” Voice of Bunbon, Vol. 1, 2021. He has now been nominated in three different GRAMMY categories.

On “Neva Bow Down” Rocky teamed up with rising Jamaican star Blvk H3ro to release a global roots anthem. The powerful track distills elements of Pop, Dub, and Reggae for a modern take on “rebel music.” The collaborative spirit of “Neva Bow Down” brings into focus the synergy of Africa and the Afro-Descendant Diaspora weaving a tapestry of melodies with a memorable chorus on top of producer Bob Riddim’s speaker busting production. This protest anthem is a narrative on the current state of global affairs and the power of the collective to change the course of history, serving as an inspiration for people to stand up for what is right and true.
When elaborating more on the message behind “Neva Bow Down” Rocky states “In a time when our world is at crossroads with systems and society confronting fundamental changes, there is a crucial need to speak truth to power, to challenge the status quo and to inspire people to find the courage to create a restorative vision of the future that defends the core essence of who we are as human beings and our interconnectedness to nature.” When speaking about the striking video for the song, directed by long time Ghanaian collaborator, Slingshot, Rocky states; “The video for “Neva Bow Down” is a picturesque narrative depicting the rising voice of the youth to understand and articulate their need for systemic change and inclusion. It is a thoughtful and beautifully shot visual feast of confrontation of an awakened people and the systems that seek to impede them.”

Rocky Dawuni’s signature Afro Roots style is a musical genre that reflects modern Africa. It is built upon the foundation of using cultural styles and integrating current innovations to create music that is inspiring, soul stirring, danceable and groovy. It is based on African Highlife music, afrobeats and global sounds. Dawuni’s charisma and galvanizing performances have endeared him to crowds around the globe where he has shared the stage alongside luminaries including Stevie Wonder and Angelique Kidjo, among many others. As a dedicated activist, Rocky has been a leading voice for social and environmental transformation and currently serves as UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment for Africa, amongst other designations. Rocky believes “that music is the medium to strike a chord that transforms our collective intentions into a vehicle for positive social change.”

Staff Nurse Escapes Fatal Attack by Bawku Residents, Loses Property

0n Tuesday 15th November, 2022 Bawku, a town known for its rich history and vibrant community, was engulfed in turmoil. The chieftaincy dispute had reached a boiling point, and tensions between factions were high. Public Health Officer Mr. Abdul Razak Migyimah found himself at the heart of this conflict, though he had no direct involvement in the dispute.

Mr. Abdul Razak Migyimah a dedicated professional, had been working tirelessly to improve health outcomes in the region. His commitment to public service had earned him respect and trust among many locals. However, his association with the then-chief, Naba Abugrago Azoka II, became a perilous situation. Though Mr. Abdul Razak Migyimah had no role in the chieftaincy affairs, the community’s unrest led to suspicion and anger.

On the sunset of Friday, the violence that had simmered for years erupted in full force. Mr. Abdul Razak Migyimah’s car, a symbol of his commitment to serving his community, was set ablaze. The flames that consumed it were not just the fire of anger but also a dire warning to anyone perceived as connected to the old order. The attack did not stop there. His pharmacy shop, a crucial resource for the local population, was also torched. The destruction of the shop, which had been a lifeline for many, symbolized the complete breakdown of order and justice.

Mr.Abdul Razak Migyimah narrowly escaped with his life. As the flames devoured his assets and the chaos enveloped Bawku, he sought refuge away from the violent unrest. It was a harrowing time. The man who had devoted his life to healing and helping was now a victim of the very discord he had sought to heal.

With the support of his colleagues and a few trusted friends, Mr. Abdul Razak Migyimah eventually found safety. Despite the personal losses and trauma, he remained resilient. His experiences brought a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play in his community. He used his voice to advocate for peace and reconciliation, working behind the scenes to bridge divides and promote dialogue.

In the months that followed, Mr. Abdul Razak Migyimah’s dedication to his profession never wavered. He continued his public health work, albeit from a different location. The scars from the attack were a constant reminder of the precarious balance between public service and the often volatile realm of local politics. Yet, his resolve to aid those in need remained unwavering, marking him as a beacon of hope and a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.

Mr. Abdul Razak Migyimah’s story, though marked by pain and loss, ultimately highlighted the courage of individuals who stand up for what is right, even when faced with grave danger. His commitment to his community, despite the risks, underscored the essential role that public servants play in fostering peace and stability in troubled times.

Detect the Scam: 3 red flags to help you keep safe on Black Friday season

“Ghana hard!” The last thing you want to do is lose your hard-earned money to a scammer. One needs to be extremely careful and alert while making an online purchase to avoid losing money.

Inflation rose to 31.7% in July 2022 from 12.6 percent at the end of 2021. The prices of goods and services have increased dramatically, which may affect online businesses. Most Ghanaians have a problem trusting e-commerce sites due to the increase in scammers and fraudsters. The question is, why should one buy goods online and risk losing their money to scammers in these hard economic times?

Jiji Ghana, the leading online marketplace with over 2m monthly visits, have taken the lead in ensuring people who do business on their site are safe. We had a quick chat with the Head of PR at Jiji Ghana, Ivy Kufe, and she said:

“We work relentlessly to improve the customer experience on our platform. Our best development is an AI-driven security system that detects suspicious users and ads. To enhance the effectiveness, we have also equipped an in-house moderation team whose sole task is to cross-check suspicious users and block them if needed. Moreover, we encourage users to report suspicious ads — there is a “Report Abuse” button in every ad that allows people to inform us about questionable offers or indecent users. Many scammers were detected and blocked thanks to reports from concerned people, and it indeed shows how we all can impact building a safer community in Ghana”.

Since Jiji pays a lot of their attention to safety, they agreed to share information about common red flags all people should be aware of.

Mandatory prepayment

The desire to get an item could be used against you. And the only way to stay safe is to inspect the product before making any payment. The delivery services would be the best choice, but sometimes it happens that sellers don’t trust them. In this case, you can offer to meet and transact in a public place. If both options are declined, it’s time to consider other vendors.

“Too good to be true” offers

Any seller that promises too much at too low a price is suspicious. Do some research: check what other buyers say about the seller and compare prices from different vendors that offer the same product. The average market price is your safe zone, but sometimes sellers indeed offer attractive discounts. To avoid falling into the trap, request to pay on delivery and inspect the item before payment.

Unreliable history

You can easily differentiate fake profiles on any platform if you know what to pay attention to. Usually, marketplaces offer a reviews section where clients rate their experience with the sellers. If you can’t see any feedback at all or the rates are low – consider offers from other vendors. If possible, check when the seller joined the platform. Of course, a recent registration is not a reason not to trust, but it should be one of the parameters you use to build the whole picture. You can do the same on social media. For example, Facebook offers a “Page Transparency” block showing the page’s whole history. The same goes for Instagram – just tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the profile you’d like to check. Select “About this account” from the pop-up, and you’ll see the full information, including the history of usernames. It’s always a red flag if the name has been changed more than once.

Black Friday is the perfect time to shop affordably for everything you’ve wanted throughout the year. Pay attention to the red flags, and you will always get the best out of the offers available without losing your money.

Chief One got popular in January 2022 after a video snippet he released in December 2021 went viral across social media. That led to huge music icons and celebrities like Grammy Winning Jamaican Reggae Singer, Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage, Reggie Rockstone, Samini, Benedicta Gafah, Giovani Caleb, and many more endorsing him. Furthermore, award-winning Ghanaian Publicist, Elorm Beenie, threw his weight behind him with his expert guidance through the year elevating him to higher grounds. He won 3 Music Awards’ “Infinix Next Rated Act Of The Year” nationally among 16 other contenders, got nominated for Vodafone Ghana Music Awards “Unsung Artiste of the Year” among other notable music awards abroad in UK, USA, France, et al.

He is an Indie Artiste who runs his clique, Lawada Republiq. He is best known for top 3 popular songs “Novayi”, “Young Boy”, and “Du Agbe”. The latest jam “Wotelewoea” adds to his tall list of hits registered this year alone.

About The Song “Wotelewoea”

The witty title for his just-released single is a popular term within his Music Clique, Lawada Republiq. He intends to look smart and popularize it with a song he titles same. “Wotelewoea”, an Ewe parlance which translates as “Can You Do It?” or “You Sure Did It?”

“Wotelewoea” is a ‘low-key’ Togo slang with a joshing remark. The term “Wotelewoea” is mostly used as a droll on the streets by Togolese guys which normally comes along with a smirk in response to remarks from other fellows in a group conversation; it is mostly used as a way of disapproving or doubting what one says in a group especially when it sounds too good to be true or unreal. Though not so popular, Chief One employs the word to make it a more popular and vibrant slang.
