Tom Jones, the author of the script and lyrics for the Broadway musical The Fantasticks, which became the longest-running musical in history, has died. He was 95. He died on Friday at his home in Sharon, Connecticut, following a battle with cancer, according to his son Michael.
Jones, who was born on February 17, 1928 in Littlefield, Texas, attended the University of Texas in 1945 to study acting, where he met his longtime partner Harvey Schmidt. Jones and Schmidt enlisted in the Korean War after getting master’s degrees a few years earlier.
After serving in the military, Jones relocated to New York City to pursue a career in theater. One of his initial options was to collaborate with composer John Donald Robb. He and Robb also wrote the musical Joy Comes to Deadhorse, which was loosely based on Edmond Rostand’s 1894 play Les Romanesques. However, due to aesthetic differences, the two split up, with Jones continuing to work on the musical.
Later, Jones asked his friend Schmidt, with whom he had kept in touch during their time in the service, to help him finish the musical that became known as The Fantasticks.
Tyrese Gibson and two of his pals, Manuel Hernandez and Eric Mora, are suing The Home Depot for $1 million for what they characterize as racial profiling in a Los Angeles-area store.
The reported incident occurred on February 11, in the evening. Their lawsuit claims that they were “subjected to outrageous discriminatory mistreatment and consumer racial profiling.” Gibson estimates that he has spent at least $1 million at various Home Depot locations throughout the years.
Gibson and his two companions were allegedly delayed at a Home Depot checkout line due to a “purported glitch in the system.”
According to the trio’s complaint, “the glitch” prevented them from checking out for roughly 20 minutes before a crowd gathered at the checkout counter due to Gibson, the franchise’s “Fast and Furious” star.
Mora and Hernandez were waiting for the transaction to be completed when he decided to leave the business and wait in his car.
Gibson stated that he discussed this plan with the Home Depot clerk. The cashier “acknowledged Gibson and said he understood,” according to the lawsuit, and Gibson then requested whether the transaction still required any additional information from the cashier.
The cashier informed Gibson that he might leave. When Gibson’s two companions attempted to pay with his credit card, the cashier allegedly “refused to complete the purchase transaction.”
“The cashier gave no reasonable explanation other than repeating ‘store policy’ and demanded to see a form of identification,” the complaint says. “The manager refused to speak with Gibson in person. It was only after significant heated discussion with the cashier that Gibson was finally able to complete the transaction.”
The complaint also stated that, “The actions of the cashier and manager were discriminatory based on race and origin. There is no other plausible explanation for the mistreatment of Plaintiffs. The transaction was refused, despite Gibson’s repeated authorizations, because of Plaintiffs’ skin colour and, in the case of Mora and Hernandez, also because of their national origin.”
“This is a clear and deplorable instance of discriminatory mistreatment and consumer racial profiling. The treatment of Gibson, Mora and Hernandez by The Home Depot was humiliating and demeaning.”
“Diversity and respect for all people are core to who we are, and we do not tolerate discrimination in any form. We value Mr. Gibson as a customer, and in the months since this happened, we’ve reached out to him and his attorneys several times to try to resolve his concerns. We will continue to do so,” as per Variety.
“The Home Depot has refused to take any responsibility for discriminating against Gibson, Mora and Hernandez, or to acknowledge the pain, humiliation and anguish caused by the company,” the lawsuit fires.
“Instead, The Home Depot doubled down, lawyered up, and treated Gibson, Mora and Hernandez and what happened to them as not worthy of any due consideration – instead inferring that they are the problem.”

Ghanaian Afrobeats singer Olivetheboy has inked a lucrative new deal with Sony’s Columbia Records through subsidiary, Bu Vision Ent. He joins an impressive list of African icons to have signed to Sony Music, including D’Banj, Davido, Wizkid, and the decorated legend Angelique Kidjo.
Led by Bu Vision founder and Columbia’s Executive Vice President Bu Thiam, with Olivetheboy’s management, Loop Music/FulLCircL Management Ltd, the monumental partnership was signed over the weekend but will be made official during a special unveiling event for the rising star on Friday, August 24, 2023.
Olivetheboy first came to the attention of Sony/Columbia Records through Bu Vision in May 2023 following the release of his international hit single, Goodsin. The song was deemed the most streamed Ghanaian single of 2023, earning the young virtuoso recognition as Ghana’s hottest artiste of 2023 so far, according to a midyear report by Chartmetrics.
Columbia EVP Bu Thiam personally flew down to Ghana in June, before finally sealing the game-changing deal last weekend after three months of talks.
And now, Bu Vision will oversee the crooner’s A&R while all licensing, promotion and distribution of creative works will be managed by Sony/Columbia Records. The partnership suggests that Loop Music/FulLCircL Management Ltd will likely retain ownership of his recordings, as has been done to date.
Olivetheboy’s deal with Sony/Columbia, the second major music label in the world, is truly revolutionary. It is only the second time the label has poached from the Ghanaian market, having first signed Gyakie in 2021. Apart from cementing Olivetheboy as one of Africa’s foremost talents, the feat continues Ghana’s rapid upward trajectory on the global music map.

In may 2023, he came into the music world unprepared to stay. His debut song, “SO SOON” is considered by many a masterpiece thanks to the message, concept, and lyricism it carries . It is the first song that hit my soul, but the scars it left have become my psychologist, comforter, and second life. He is a high hope hustler who always shoot for the moon because he knows if he miss, he will hit the stars.
The feedback from his debut song are the reasons he want to dedicate a great portion of his remaining life to speak out the silent that could unlock the positive change africa has been longing for. So soon! (e too quick) in krio is the most spoken language in sierra leone which means a surprisingly short time and it’s the title given the song.
” Why have we forgotten so soon” is the question used by the rapper as a basement upon which he constructed a strong message reminding Sierra Leone o f the importance of peace. By throwing light at the 11 years of civil that left the country bleeding scars. Sierra leone has faced series of violent protests, the left tens of both law enforcement personnel and civilians death .
Nhoj believes that the manner at which Sierra Leone violently take to the street to express their discontent, projects the absence of the devastating brutal image of the 11 years of civil war in the mental archive of the people.
The rapper bets on the road to a less violent and more or insecure Sierra Leone is built on the strategy of rebuilding the brutal mental imagery of the war.
